Info provided by Simon Stokes: 1/ Float On - 12" - NTONE 12 This caught my eye some years ago as it comes in a sealed Static Shield Bag (the bluey-silver type complete with yellow printing to the effect that "handling precautions required". I could never afford it when I first saw it (student days) and have been looking for it ever since. At last, I found a copy, and it is excellent! - Instead of an "A" and "B" side the pressing is lettered "P" and "Q" The "P"-side label resembles a LoveHeart sweet with just the words "Float On..." - The "Q"-side has a strawberry with the word "Purr" written across the bottom in script typeface and the tracklisting as follows :- P - Float On Q1 - The Sun Comes Up Inside A Big Strawberry Q2 - Riverweed Credits :- "Float On" written & produced by Funki Porcini, N4Eric and Stuart Warren-Hill "The Sun..." written & produced by Funki Porcini and N4Eric "Riverweed" written and produced by Funki Porcini In case you haven't heard it, Float On is very reminiscent of early ambient tracks by The Orb, gentle melodies with lots of sound effects and samples. It has a recording of a goods train running through it that also reminded me of The KLF's classic Chill Out LP. To end the track, there is a snippet of what sounds like French musical hall singing, with an accapella female vocal and male backing vocals - Weird! At first glance, the vinyl looks like it has 8 tracks, but they all segue together seamlessly to produce one long track. The "Q" side has 3 tracks, the first is a bizarre conversation between two Welsh guys talking about aliens landing and disguising themselves as petrol pumps?!? - This fades into another soft, ambient piece which then builds up with the help of a drumtrack and snippets of jazz before it mellows out again and fades in Riverweed which is the sound of running water and a gentle keyboard line over the top. Incidentally, the run off grooves of the records are always worth checking - in this case the "P" side reads "Made On Location On The River Thames - 6/5/95" and the "Q" side - "Egghead Plays For Keeps!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2/ King Ashabanapal - 12" - Zen 1237 Another highly sought after 12" (as you mention on your site) - Presumably because of the remixes, one of which is an early appearance by Plaid, the Warp Records act. This came in a generic Ninja Tune sleeve, so I can't comment on the artwork, both record labels are black & white with photos of some sort of large, shaped inflatable. Tracks - A1 - King Ashabanapal (Dillinja Mix) A2 - King Ashabanapal (DigiDub Mix) - remix credited to The Lord DAT B3 (I presume this is a misprint and should be B1) - Farewell Alice B2 - King Ashabanapal (Part 0.75) B3 - King Ashabanapal (Plaid Mix) As you would expect, the Dillinja mix is verging on serious drum & bass, while the Plaid mix has some of their trademark touches, but they haven't completely adopted the track as they have done with some of their later mixes for other artists. The Farewell Alice track contains narration from a version of Alice In Wonderland, including the clip where Alice finds some tall mushrooms, breaks two pieces off and eats them, only to grow in size and come to the conclusion that they must be magic mushrooms! No text on the run-off grooves which is disappointing.
